On 22 July in Beijing, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Georgy Borisenko and his Chinese counterpart Miao Deyu held political consultations on the prevention and resolution of conflicts on the African continent, in particular in Sudan and Libya, according to the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
According to the statement, the situation in Lebanon, Syria, Yemen, Sudan and Libya was also discussed.
It added that particular attention was paid to the issue of preventing and resolving conflicts on the African continent, and co-ordinating support from Russia and China for African countries in overcoming the security challenges they face, based on the principle of ‘African problems – African solutions.
The parties also exchanged experiences of holding events within the framework of the Russia–Africa Partnership Forum and the China–Africa Co-operation Forum. Moscow and Beijing expressed their desire to help Africa establish itself as an influential centre of global development and to assist African states in strengthening their sovereignty.
Following the meeting, the parties noted the similarity of their approaches to the crises currently affecting Africa, expressing their readiness to enhance foreign policy co-ordination in order to promote the peaceful resolution of conflicts.
Earlier in July, Borisenko held a briefing for the heads of African diplomatic missions accredited in Moscow on preparations for the third Russia–Africa Summit scheduled to take place in late October. (Afr Initiative/GSF)
