By 1 min read

In N’Djamena, the capital of Chad, celebrations marking the 65th anniversary of the country’s independence were held on 11 August, including a large-scale military parade reviewed by the country’s leader Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno, according to the presidential website.

The parade featured foot, mechanised and air units.

On the eve of the celebrations, the head of state addressed the nation, emphasising the importance of unity, the fight against corruption and sustainable development.

“The independence of our country resonates with the pan-African spirit that drives us, and with the firm conviction that together we will build a prosperous Chad, respected on the regional and international stage,” Déby Itno said.

The president noted that the country intends to modernise agriculture and industrial livestock farming, develop infrastructure, and ensure energy and food security.

On 11 August 1960, the Republic of Chad declared its full independence from France. The first president of independent Chad was François Tombalbaye.
