Nigeria and Russia have reaffirmed their commitment to deepening diplomatic and strategic ties, following high-level talks between Russia’s Ambassador to Nigeria, Andrey Podelyshev, and Nigeria’s newly appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu.
The meeting between Ojukwu and Podelyshev focused on expanding cooperation across multiple sectors, including security, education, energy, economic development, and military collaboration.
Discussions between the two also explored avenues for technology transfer, capacity building, and investment partnerships. Both parties reiterated their mutual dedication to strengthening diplomatic relations and advancing shared development objectives.
Ambassador Podelyshev’s visit to the Minister Odumegwu-Ojukwu comes at a critical time, as Nigeria continues with its efforts toward containing security challenges. In November 2025, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova stated that Moscow is prepared to assist Nigeria in combating terrorism —a pledge now being discussed through direct diplomatic channels.
It will be recalled that Odumegwu-Ojukwu, was appointed to replace the former minister, Yusuf Tuggar who resigned from his position to pursue political ambitions. Before his resignation, Tuggar has signaled that strengthening strategic partnerships with nations like Russia will be a cornerstone of Nigeria’s foreign policy under President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
