The balance of power is shifting towards new centres of growth in the Global South and East, Russian President Vladimir Putin said on 12 September at the BRICS Summit in India.
“The unipolar system of international relations that served a narrow group of countries is becoming a thing of the past. The balance of power is shifting towards new centres of growth in the Global South and East. More and more states are loudly and clearly declaring their readiness to defend their national interests and participate in addressing global challenges,” the president said.
He noted that the formation of a multipolar world is not without difficulties.
“This [new order] is facing resistance from those who are accustomed to thinking in colonial terms, essentially dividing the world into a ‘flowering garden’ and ‘wild jungles’, while living at someone else’s expense. They are not ready to accept the changing reality and are seeking in every possible way to hold back their growing competitors,” the head of state said.
According to the president, all means are being used, including tariff wars, illegitimate sanctions, attempts at economic diktat, blackmail and interference in internal affairs.
Earlier in September, Yuri Ushakov, Aide to the President of the Russian Federation, said Putin and Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed would meet on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit in India on 12 September.
