Voice of Nigeria (VON) and the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Nigeria have launched a Chinese Language and Cultural Teaching Programme aimed at deepening cultural ties, media collaboration, and mutual understanding between Nigeria, Africa, and China.

The initiative was unveiled at a ceremony in Abuja on Monday, was designed to encourage Mandarin learning among Nigerians, particularly media practitioners and young people seeking educational and business opportunities in China.

Speaking during the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), the Director-General of Voice of Nigeria, Jibrin Baba Ndace, described the programme as a major step towards strengthening the long-standing friendship between both countries.

“This initiative will further promote cooperation, mutual respect, and shared development between Nigeria and China through language learning and cultural exchange,” Ndace said.

He commended the Chinese Embassy and the China Cultural Centre for supporting educational and cultural cooperation, noting that the programme aligns with VON’s vision centred on “People, Platform and Partnership.”

Ndace stressed that language remains a vital tool in international relations and effective storytelling, adding that greater cultural understanding would help both countries share more balanced and positive narratives.

In his remarks, the Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, Yu Dunhai, described the programme as timely amid growing cooperation between China, Nigeria and African countries in general.

“There are increasing numbers of Africans eager to learn Mandarin and explore opportunities in China,” the envoy said.

“This language programme will create stronger people-to-people ties and career opportunities for young Africans.” He added.

Also speaking, Dr. Suleiman Haruna, representing the Federal Ministry of Information and National Orientation, said the partnership would strengthen the long-standing Nigeria-China relationship and provide training opportunities for Nigerians interested in language acquisition and international business.

According to the officials from the two sides, the programme is expected to commence in the coming weeks, with priority given to journalists and young professionals. (GSF)
