The Federal Government has congratulated the Government and people of the People’s Republic of China on the occasion of the country’s 77th National Day, reaffirming Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening its strategic partnership with the Asian nation.

In a statement issued on Thursday by the spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Oluwafemi Adeniyi, Nigeria commended China for its nation-building achievements, resilience and sustained commitment to socio-economic development.

The relationship between the two countries was elevated to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in September 2024 during the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) Summit in Beijing, providing a framework for deeper bilateral cooperation.

According to the statement, bilateral cooperation covers trade and investment, infrastructure, energy, agriculture, defence, development cooperation, solid minerals, culture and renewable energy, among other areas of mutual interest.

The Federal Government also reaffirmed its support for initiatives aimed at promoting domestic industrialisation and value addition, as well as the implementation of the outcomes of the Beijing FOCAC Summit.

Nigeria further highlighted the importance of China’s zero-tariff policy for African exports in expanding market access and supporting economic development.

The statement added that Nigeria and China continue to cooperate in multilateral institutions under the framework of South-South Cooperation, particularly on issues relating to international peace and security and sustainable development.
Nigeria and China established diplomatic relations on February 10, 1971, with 2026 marking 55 years of bilateral diplomatic ties.

“On this very occasion, the Federal Government extended its best wishes to Chinese President Xi Jinping and the people of China, wishing the country continued peace, progress and prosperity,” the statement concluded. (GSF)
