NCC Board Commends Telcos on Infrastructure, Consumer Compensation

The Governing Board of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s telecommunications sector and advancing the nation’s digital economy, while commending industry players for their ongoing infrastructure expansion efforts and consumer protection.

This was stated in a communique at the end of the Board’s 109th Meeting released by the Public Affairs Department of the Commission.

The Board specifically lauded Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) for their sustained investments aimed at expanding network coverage and improving the Quality of Experience for consumers. According to the communique, operators have planned the deployment of over 12,000 additional coverage and capacity sites nationwide, with more than 5,000 already completed.

It emphasized that further recognition was given to colocation and infrastructure-sharing licensees for extending fiber connectivity to more than 700 sites and carrying out infrastructure upgrades at over 2,000 Base Transceiver Stations (BTS).

On consumer protection, the Board reviewed the implementation of directives requiring operators to compensate subscribers affected by poor Quality of Service. The Board according to the communique, noted substantial compliance, with over 75 million subscribers having so far benefited from compensation measures. It added that validation exercises continue to ensure that all eligible consumers are adequately covered.

Acknowledging Nigeria’s growing demand for data services, the Board noted the importance of expanding fiber infrastructure to improve service quality, reduce pressure on mobile networks, and enhance connectivity for homes, businesses, and institutions. It stated that significant growth in Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) subscriptions and reaffirmed its support for policies that encourage broader access to wholesale backbone and metropolitan fiber networks.

On concern over infrastructure vandalism, the Board frowned at persistent incidents of infrastructure vandalism and reiterated the need for stronger collaboration among stakeholders to protect telecommunications assets. It commended ongoing efforts of security agencies in this regard while calling for more decisive action to safeguard critical national infrastructure.

The NCC reaffirmed its resolve to create an enabling environment for continued growth, promote innovation, and service excellence in Nigeria’s telecommunications industry. (GSF)
