The 2029 World Athletics Championships will be held in Nairobi, the capital of Kenya. This was reported by The Star on 15 September, citing World Athletics President Sebastian Coe.
“With this Council decision today, we continue to fulfil our mission of growing athletics worldwide. Over the coming years, we will be organising championships in Africa,” said Coe.
The decision was taken in the Hungarian capital, Budapest, following a meeting of the World Athletics Council.
According to Coe, Kenya beat Munich, Rome and London in the bid to host the championships.
Kenya already has experience of hosting major international competitions: in 2017, the country hosted the World Under-18 Athletics Championships, and in 2021, the World Under-20 Athletics Championships.
Earlier in September, the Olympic flame was brought to Dakar, the capital of Senegal, in the run-up to the 2026 Summer Youth Olympic Games. (Afr Initiative/GSF)
