A landmark project of cooperation between China and Indonesia under the Belt and Road Initiative framework — which has attracted over 60,000 Indonesian employees — won multiple national Corporate Social Responsibility awards in Indonesia for local sustainable development.
Since its inception in 2013, the Indonesia Morowali Industrial Park has harnessed the region’s abundant nickel reserves to grow into a large integrated industrial cluster, attracting a total investment of some $35 billion from enterprises in China, Australia, Singapore, and Indonesia — generating nearly 100,000 direct jobs.
On Sept 29, the 2026 Indonesia CSR Awards and Indonesia Sustainable Development Goals Awards ceremony — organized by the Corporate Forum for CSR Development — was held in Jakarta. IMIP won five awards for its continued efforts in education, healthcare, environmental management, and agricultural development.
The “Sinergi Pendidikan Berdaya (Education Empowerment Synergy)” program received a Platinum Award in both of its two focus areas — improving school facilities and learning environments, and strengthening teacher capacity. The “Gerakan Masyarakat Sehat (Healthy Community Movement)” and “Pengelolaan Sampah Terpadu (Integrated Waste Management)” programs each received a Gold Award. Rahmad Feri from the Berkah Mobula Farmers’ Group in Le-Le Village was recognized as the “Best Local Hero in Edu Agriculture”.
The award-winning programs are closely aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and cover community education, public health, environmental management, and agricultural development.
From bringing health education into villages and schools and improving learning conditions in rural schools, to establishing waste banks, promoting the resource recovery of organic waste, and using community gardening to introduce agricultural knowledge, IMIP’s community initiatives are rooted in the practical needs of local residents and have gradually developed into a coordinated approach to sustainable development across multiple areas.
In education, IMIP places equal emphasis on improving facilities and building capacity. The park has developed and supported the operation of the IMIP Integrated School, which opened kindergarten and primary education programs in 2022 and expanded to junior secondary education in 2025. It currently has more than 700 students, while an IMIP senior high school is under planning. The Morowali Polytechnic Institute of Metals, completed in 2025, offers three academic programs and currently has more than 600 students enrolled. The park has improved facilities and learning environments at surrounding schools, while programs including the IMIP Collaborative Scholarship, career exploration, and industrial science education continue to support the development of local talent.
Environmental management has expanded from waste collection and cleanup toward community-based resource recovery. Alongside regular environmental cleanup activities, IMIP has supported surrounding villages in establishing three waste banks, engaging more than 400 housewives in waste sorting, and enabling the recovery of more than 30 metric tons of plastic waste. From 2023 to 2026, more than 1,400 tons of waste were collected along the Trans-Sulawesi Highway, while nearly 6,000 waste bins were donated to local villages and schools, contributing to cleaner and more sustainable community environments.
The individual award focuses on a local practitioner committed to rural development. Rahmad Feri has long promoted community gardening and agricultural education, encouraging villagers to develop home gardens and bringing agricultural classes into schools.
In recent years, IMIP’s community development initiatives have gradually expanded from one-off material assistance to a broader range of areas. The five awards represent a milestone in IMIP’s long-term efforts to advance sustainable development in local communities. (CD/GSF)
