President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the establishment of the National Tax Policy Implementation Committee (NTPIC) to coordinate the rollout of recently enacted tax laws and advance the administration’s economic reform agenda.

According to a statement by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, the committee will be chaired by Mr. Joseph Tegbe, a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) and the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria (CITN), with more than 35 years of professional experience, including senior leadership at KPMG Africa.

According to the statement, Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Wale Edun will provide ministerial oversight.

The committee’s mandate includes broad consultations across public and private sectors, engagement with subnational governments, and public awareness efforts aimed at ensuring smooth implementation of the new tax policies. The body is also tasked with harmonising inter-agency processes, aligning existing frameworks with new statutes, and providing unified oversight throughout the transition period.

Mrs. Sanyade Okoli, Special Adviser to the President on Finance and Economy, will serve as secretary, while other members include Ismaeel Ahmed, Rukaiya El-Rufai, and several additional experts drawn from tax administration, finance, law, and civil society.

President Tinubu said the establishment of the NTPIC reflects his administration’s commitment to a fair, transparent, and technology-driven tax system that supports economic growth while safeguarding the interests of citizens and businesses.

“These new Tax Acts reflect our administration’s commitment to building a fair, transparent, and technology-driven tax system that supports economic growth while protecting the interests of citizens and businesses,” he said, adding that the committee will ensure coherence in implementation across all levels of government.

Responding to the appointment, Mr. Tegbe said the committee is prepared to work diligently to support Nigeria’s economic development. “We understand the strategic importance of these Tax Acts. Our committee will work closely with all stakeholders to support the Minister of Finance in ensuring seamless implementation and building public trust in the tax system,” he stated.

Accordingly, Finance Minister Edun said the committee will provide the authority the needed structure to reset the fiscal policy landscape. “With the establishment of this Committee, Mr President has not only set the direction but also provided the authority and support required to reset not just the tax system but the entire fiscal policy framework of government,” the minister said.

The NTPIC is expected to enhance revenue mobilisation, minimise leakages, and strengthen the fiscal sustainability of the government in line with national development goals. (GSF)
