Sergey Lavrov held a telephone conversation with his Iranian counterpart, Abbas Araghchi, to discuss recent U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran and their implications for regional stability.
According to the Russian Foreign Ministry, the call took place at the initiative of the Iranian side.
Araghchi briefed Lavrov on steps being taken by Iran’s leadership in response to what he described as aggression by the United States and Israel, accusing the two countries of once again undermining negotiations aimed at a peaceful resolution of issues surrounding Iran’s nuclear programme.
The Iranian minister also informed his Russian counterpart of plans to urgently convene a meeting of the United Nations Security Council to address the situation.
Lavrov, for his part, condemned what he termed an “unprovoked armed attack” by the United States and Israel on Iran, saying it violated the principles and norms of international law and disregarded potential consequences for regional and global security.
He stressed the need for an immediate halt to the attacks and called for a return to political and diplomatic efforts to resolve tensions.
The Russian foreign minister reiterated Moscow’s readiness, including within the framework of the UN Security Council, to facilitate efforts toward a peaceful settlement based on international law, mutual respect and a balance of interests. (GSF)
