The leader of Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces (RSF) rebels, Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo (Hemedti), has been sworn in as the head of a “parallel government”. This was reported by the local outlet Al Hadath.
It was noted that Dagalo also announced the formation of a “presidential council” to administer the territories controlled by the RSF.
On 26 July, a coalition led by RSF rebels declared the creation of a “parallel government” in Sudan, prompting condemnation from the African Union (AU) and other international organisations. The UN Security Council also condemned the rebels’ announcement.
The civil war in Sudan between Dagalo’s RSF rebel group and the government army led by Sovereign Council Chairman Abdel Fattah al-Burhan began in April 2023. (Africa Initiative/GSF)
