Russian President Vladimir Putin has extended his condolences to Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian following the assassination of the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, and members of his family.

In a telegram message addressed to the Iranian leader, the President Putin condemned the killing, describing it as an act carried out with “cynical disregard for all norms of human morality and international law.”

Putin stated that in Russia, Ayatollah Khamenei would be remembered as an outstanding statesman who made a significant personal contribution to strengthening Russian-Iranian relations and elevating them to the level of a comprehensive strategic partnership.

Through President Pezeshkian, Putin also conveyed his sincere words of sympathy and support to the relatives and loved ones of the Supreme Leader, as well as to the Government and people of Iran.

Putin’s message however underscores Moscow’s solidarity with Tehran at a time of profound national mourning and signals the importance Russia attaches to its strategic ties with Iran. (GSF )
