Nigerian poet and activist Maryam Bukar has been officially appointed as a UN global peace advocate, according to the organisation’s website.
Bukar will support the advancement of the “Women, Peace and Security” and “Youth, Peace and Security” agendas through poetry, public speaking and digital platforms.
“Her commitment to the cause will help raise awareness of the UN’s peace and security priorities,” said Jean-Pierre Lacroix, UN Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations.
In June, rapper from the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) Rebecca Kalonji (Sista Becky) became a partner of the UN World Food Programme (WFP).
