Trade between Russia and Egypt exceeded $9 billion in 2024, making Egypt Russia’s largest trade and economic partner on the African continent. The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated this in its Telegram channel, noting that 26 August marks the 82nd anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
“An important element of bilateral co-operation is the Russian-Egyptian Intergovernmental Commission on Trade, Economic, Scientific and Technical Co-operation (IPC),” the Foreign Ministry said in its statement.
The ministry also recalled that one of the key projects being implemented as part of co-operation between the countries is the construction of Egypt’s first nuclear power plant — El Dabaa. Since 2022, the construction has been carried out by the Russian state corporation Rosatom.
Moscow and Cairo maintain regular contacts “at the highest and high levels” and are determined to further strengthen close co-ordination within the UN and other multilateral platforms, the Foreign Ministry added.
In June, Rosatom announced the start of installation of the third tier of the inner containment of the reactor building of the second power unit. In July, the countries signed an additional agreement to the contract for the construction of the nuclear power plant. (GSF)
