China on Tuesday criticized Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s erroneous remarks on Taiwan and urged Japan to immediately withdraw the remarks, reflect deeply and make corrections.

Foreign ministry spokesperson Mao Ning made the statement at a regular press conference in Beijing when answering a question regarding how the spokesperson views the future direction of China-Japan relations in the context that China has recently intensively refuted Takaichi’s remarks on Taiwan, and that some commentators say that China-Japan relations are sliding to the lowest point in recent years.

Mao stated that the root cause of the current situation in China-Japan relations lies in Takaichi openly making erroneous remarks on Taiwan, which arbitrarily interfere in China’s internal affairs, seriously violate the one-China principle and the spirit of the four political documents between China and Japan, and undermine the political foundation of China-Japan relations.

“China’s position on safeguarding its core interests and defending international justice has not changed at all. Japan must immediately withdraw its erroneous remarks, reflect deeply, change course, and give the Chinese people a clear explanation,” said Mao. (PD/GSF)
