In an effort to support residents, especially the vulnerable people in Katsina, the wife of the governor, Hajiya Zulaihat Radda, in collaboration with Noor Dubai foundation, has flagged off a free cataract surgical camp.

During the exercise in Katsina, the governor’s wife said that the gesture will provide eye surgeries, medications, and glasses for residents with eye problems.

The exercise commenced in Katsina on Thursday, with support from the Noor Dubai foundation, and its implementing partner, Inclusive Eye-Care Foundation.

The exercise was conducted through the governor’s wife’s pet project, Safe Space Humanitarian Initiative (SASHIN), and the state’s ministry of health.

The governor’s wife said that the free eye treatment reminded her of the profound impact of blindness and visual impairment on growth and development.

Radda said, “The Noor Dubai Foundation’s commitment to preventing blindness and promoting eye health is truly commendable.

“We truly appreciate this partnership and we are proud to be part of this humanitarian effort, which aligns with the governor’s vision of ensuring equitable access to quality healthcare for all residents.

“This initiative will not only restore sight, but also empower individuals, families, and communities, fostering economic growth, social inclusion, and overall well-being.”

She expressed excitement as people in the state would have access to quality eye-care services that will undoubtedly transform lives and strengthen collective wellbeing.

Radda added, “The prevention of long-term visual impairment and avoidable blindness remains one of the key priorities of the administration of my husband.

“In line with this vision, our government continues to work closely with reputable organisations such as Noor Foundation to deliver sustainable healthcare interventions that ensure all citizens live healthy, productive, and fulfilling lives.

“According to a 2020 survey, there are at least 25,000 blind people in Katsina, and a significant number of these cases could have been prevented through timely and quality medical care.”

According to her, this underscores the urgency and importance of their partnership, describing it as a call to action that compels for strengthening the healthcare system, expanding access to preventive services and renewed commitment.

Radda said, “This partnership therefore represents more than a medical intervention, it symbolises hope, compassion, and the power of collective responsibility.

“By providing eye screenings, surgeries, and treatment to those in need, this initiative is restoring vision, dignity, and opportunity to countless individuals and families across our state.”

Earlier, Dr Manal Taryam, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the foundation, disclosed that since its inception in 2008, it had improved the lives of more than 33 million people across Asia and Africa.

Represented by Dr Mansir Rabiu, the foundation’s Director, Operations, Taryam said that they have provided comprehensive eye care services, including surgeries, medications, and glasses to various beneficiaries. (GSF)
