The Ghanaian government has approved the country’s decision to apply for BRICS membership as part of efforts to diversify its international partnerships and strengthen co-operation with the Global South, Foreign Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa said on 6 October.
“The Cabinet of President John Dramani Mahama has decided that Ghana will be joining BRICS,” the Foreign Minister said, according to 3News.
According to Ablakwa, Accra expects membership of the grouping of major emerging economies to provide the country with additional opportunities for economic development and expanded international co-operation.
“We believe that joining India in BRICS will give us economic options, will diversify our base and our partnerships, and will also allow us to have more cooperation within the Global South framework, as far as South-South engagements are concerned,” he added.
The Foreign Minister also announced plans for Ghana to deepen co-operation with India in railway development, pharmaceuticals, information and communications technology (ICT), defence, agriculture, science and technology.
Earlier in October, Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi agreed to expand their partnership in key strategic areas, including defence, pharmaceuticals and infrastructure development. (Afr Initiative/GSF)
