Nigeria Supports President Xi’s Global Governance Initiative

Nigeria has expressed its support for the recently proposal for Global Governance Initiative by the Chinese President Xi Jinping. It will be recalled that President Xi in his statement during the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation’s leaders summit in Tianjin, unveiled the GGI along with it’s five concepts.

In a statement by the Nigeria’s foreign affairs ministry spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa, Nigerian government described GGI as timely and thoughtful contribution coming on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the United Nations.

Ebeifa in the statement noted that building on the earlier initiatives by the Chinese leader: Global Development Initiative (GDI), Global Security Initiative (GSI), and Global Civilization Initiative (GCI), the newly introduced GGI will further address the pressing challenges in global governance, including the need for all inclusive participation of all nations in global governance.

He maintained that Nigeria in particular appreciates the five concepts of GGI: 1.Sovereign Equality, 2.Rule of Law, 3.People-centred Governance and Result Oriented Action, adding that Nigeria as one of major Africa’s economies and active participant in multilateralism, the Nigerian government recognises the GGI as a valuable platform for advancing shared priorities, including reforms of the United Nations.

The statement further acknowledged the potential for alignment between the GGI and it’s national development objectives, principles of strategic autonomy, as well as the African Union’s 2063 agenda. “Nigeria remains committed to working in collaboration with all partners across the Global South to foster consensus, strengthen regional cooperation and contribute meaningfully to a sustainable and equitable global order”, the statement noted.

Reaffirming Nigeria’s support for the initiative, Ebeinfa concluded in the statement that Nigeria is committed to a more just, inclusive and effective international order that will reflect the aspirations of all people and uphold the principle of shared responsibility and mutual respect. (GSF)
