As of 1 August, Algeria has assumed the chairmanship of the African Union Peace and Security Council (PSC AU) for a three-year term. The announcement was made by the Algeria Press Service news agency.

The country secured this position following elections held in Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) during the 24th extraordinary session of the Executive Council.

The PSC AU is the principal organ of the African Union responsible for conflict prevention, crisis management and post-conflict reconstruction. The Council comprises 15 member states — five with a three-year mandate and ten serving for two years.

Earlier, Algeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ammar Benjama, was elected Vice-President of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) for the year 2026.
